The Selfish Gene
A view of evolution from the gene's vantage point rather than the organism's: bodies are disposable survival machines that genes build and discard in order to keep copying themselves.

Dawkins shows how parental care, cooperation among relatives, and even some cooperation between unrelated individuals can be accounted for through kin selection: a gene that makes an organism sacrifice itself for several copies of that same gene sitting in relatives' bodies will, on balance, spread more successfully than a purely self-interested gene acting alone. He is careful to note that gene "selfishness" is not a moral category but a metaphor for how selection works, and that selfish genes can perfectly well build a species capable of genuine kindness.
A separate section, and the one most often quoted afterward, introduces the meme: a unit of cultural information that spreads through human society by the same principles of copying, competition and selection as a gene does in biology, but independently of it. With this move Dawkins pushes the argument beyond biology into a general theory of replicators — anything that copies itself and competes for the resources needed to keep copying.
The book rewards reading less as a genetics textbook than as a lesson in disciplined reasoning: it trains the reader to look for a replicator's hidden calculus behind visible behavior, while warning against confusing a biological explanation for behavior with a justification of it.
